On the morning of December 5th, 2024, the Vietnam International Arbitration Center (VIAC) and the Hanoi Bar Association (HBA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding which aims to build a collaborative relationship based on common goals. These include promoting research, developing legal policies, training practical legal knowledge and skills in ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution), as well as providing legal knowledge in business and investment.

The Signing Ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr. Le Hong Hanh – President of the Vietnam International Arbitration Center (VIAC), Lawyer Vu Anh Duong – Vice President and Secretary General of VIAC, along with other specialized staffs in Hanoi. Representing the Hanoi Bar Association are Lawyer Dao Ngoc Chuyen – Chairman of the Hanoi Bar Association, Lawyer Le Dang Tung – Vice Chairman of Training, Lawyer Nguyen Van Ha – Vice Chairman, Lawyer Nguyen Quang Son – Chief of Office, and other members of the Executive Committee.

Speaking at the Signing Ceremony, Lawyer Dao Ngoc Chuyen – Chairman of the Hanoi Bar Association, remarked that over the past two decades, commercial arbitration has continued to develop, receiving attention and gaining significance. This growing trend leaves implications for arbitration centers in Vietnam, especially VIAC, and for lawyers participating in arbitration proceedings. In developed countries, extrajudicial dispute resolution methods in commercial disputes is given considerable attention and has developed accordingly, even comparable to court litigation. However, commercial arbitration in Vietnam is still in the early stages of development, requiring due attention. Arbitration is not only important to arbitration organizations but also to legal organizations, particularly bar associations. The Executive Committee of the Hanoi Bar Association hoped that following the signing of the Memorandum, both parties will implement effective, high-quality activities with positive impacts on both arbitration and lawyers’ professional work.

Prof. Dr. Le Hong Hanh, President of VIAC, also agreed with Lawyer Dao Ngoc Chuyen's viewpoint. Prof. Dr. Le Hong Hanh emphasized the crucial role of lawyers in not only protecting the legal rights and interests of the disputing parties, but also in the development of commercial arbitration and other alternative dispute resolution methods. Therefore, in addition to building the trust in arbitration among lawyers and legal professionals, VIAC always strive to enhance their expertise and skills in arbitration proceedings, particularly at VIAC. Prof. Dr. Le Hong Hanh expressed his hopes that future collaboration between VIAC and HBA will create opportunities for diverse and in-depth activities aimed at the legal community in the near future.

Continuing the meeting, specialized staffs from both sides also had detailed discussions about the specific activities to be implemented within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding. VIAC and the Hanoi Bar Association hope to soon realize the commitments outlined in the Memorandum successfully and efficiently.
